Local gastronomy and culinary experiences

Without a doubt, gastronomy is one of the great attractions of San Vicente de la Barquera. Among our specialties, rice, fish and seafood stand out.

Our most typical dish is called Sorropotún, a hallmark of the town, with characteristics similar to other typical dishes from northern Spain, but with special features that make it unique. It is a stew prepared mainly with tuna, potatoes and onions, invented by sailors who fished on the Cantabrian coast between the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries.

In 2024, it was registered with the Spanish Patent and Trademark Office under number 4,246,005. San Vicente Town Council offers up to 5,000 portions to residents and visitors every year during the festivities of La Barquera and El Mozucu.

Another product you should try are the cheeses from the Nansa Valley, made in an artisanal way, and homemade desserts such as “quesadas” and “sobaos.”

If you go for a walk around the town, you can buy these products at the San Vicente de la Barquera Food Market (“Mercado de Abastos”), the Weekly Market (“Mercado Semanal”) in Comillas and the Local Produce Market (“Mercado de Productos Locales”) in Cabezón de la Sal.
